Cour d'Appel de Lyon

On the Saône’s right bank in Vieux Lyon, the Palais de Justice stands where justice has been administered for centuries. Earlier buildings on this plot, including the maison and then palais de Roanne, had fallen into ruin by the late eighteenth century. In 1827 a competition chose Louis-Pierre Baltard to design a new courthouse; construction ran from 1835 to 1847, producing a unified justice complex facing the river. For much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it concentrated the main courts of the Rhône: civil, criminal, commercial and appeal jurisdictions under one roof. After the new judicial city opened at Part-Dieu in 1995, the Court of Appeal and the Rhône assize court remained here, giving the building its role as Lyon’s historic courthouse.

Superb architecture, inspiriting design and amazing colonnade; it is wonderful that that is built next to the river because it is possible to see it without obstacles by walking though the front bridge; on the other hand the sculpture in front representing a man lifting another looks very nice.

Neo classic building with an architetural originality imposing respect for the Court. Beautifull

I can’t comment about the legal side as fortunately have never had to visited but can only comment about this beautiful neoclassical building in Vieux Lyon with 24 Corinthian columns, just below Fourviere. Here the infamous Klaus Barbie was judged and sentenced to life in prison in 1987 due to the crimes against humanity in the Second World War.

Not sure this place is worth visiting but the view of the old town from it is quite charming.

Beautiful building to see!

I've never been inside (not sure if public is allowed inside just to look?) but it's a stupendous building that commands attentions! I crossed the Palace of Justice well-being bridge across the Sâone river and you can't help but notice the twenty four Corinthian columns of the front! This adds intriguing features to Vieux Lyon side. It certainly took inspiration from Greek temples architecture but the colonades on the front and not the sides. Wish I was able to visit inside but a marvelous experience just to admire from the outside the enormity and glorious architecture of this building.
